Why Swimming Lessons Are Essential for Children in Frankston

Three children in swimming lesson with PARC Swim teacher

For families living in Frankston and across the Mornington Peninsula, water is a part of everyday life. From visits to local pools and beaches to holidays spent near rivers and lakes, children are regularly exposed to aquatic environments. That’s why swimming lessons are not just an extracurricular activity – they are a vital life skill that helps children stay safe, build confidence and enjoy the water for life.

At PARC Swim, our vision is simple: Every child in Frankston can swim. Through high-quality swimming lessons, qualified instructors and a supportive learning environment, we help children develop the skills they need to be safe and confident in and around water.

Why Are Swimming Lessons Important?

Swimming lessons provide children with skills that extend far beyond the pool. Learning to swim helps children:

  • Develop essential water safety skills.
  • Build confidence in aquatic environments.
  • Improve strength, coordination and fitness.
  • Enhance social skills through structured learning.
  • Create healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

Most importantly, swimming lessons help children develop the skills and awareness needed to stay safer around water. In a country surrounded by beaches, pools, bays and waterways, swimming is one of the most valuable skills a child can learn.

What Age Should Children Start Swimming Lessons?

Children benefit from exposure to water from an early age. Early swimming lessons help children become familiar with the water, build confidence and develop foundational aquatic skills in a safe and supportive environment.

As children grow, structured swimming lessons provide a clear pathway for developing:

  • Water confidence
  • Floating and survival skills
  • Safe water entry and exits
  • Stroke development
  • Swimming endurance
  • Water safety awareness

By starting early and maintaining consistent lessons, children can progressively develop the skills needed to become strong and capable swimmers.

Why Consistency Matters in Learn to Swim Programs

Like any skill, swimming requires regular practice.

Children who participate in ongoing swimming lessons generally make stronger progress than those who attend sporadically. Consistent exposure allows children to reinforce techniques, build muscle memory and gain confidence through repetition.

The more opportunities children have to practise their skills, the more comfortable and capable they become in the water. Regular lessons also help maintain momentum and support long-term skill development.

How Swimming Lessons Build Water Safety Skills

Water safety is one of the most important outcomes of a quality learn-to-swim program. Swimming lessons teach children how to:

  • Move safely through water.
  • Understand their own abilities and limitations.
  • Respond calmly if they unexpectedly enter deep water.
  • Float and tread water.
  • Follow safe behaviours around pools, beaches and waterways.

These skills help create greater confidence while encouraging children to respect the water and make safer decisions throughout their lives.

Have you heard of Incidental Exercise? 🧹🚶‍♀️

Incidental exercise is physical activity that occurs naturally as part of your daily routine! It’s the small bursts of activity you accumulate throughout the day, such as carrying in the groceries, or playing with the kids, that helps you achieve your 30-20-2.

Some examples of Incidental Exercise are:
- Doing housework like vacuuming, mopping, or gardening
- Walking up stairs instead of taking elevator or escalator
- Parking further away from your destination to get your steps up
- Walking during lunch breaks, or having a standing meeting

Remember, all movement counts! 🌟

For more information about 30-20-2, or helpful resources and workouts to get you moving, head to our Digital Hub.
