Deagan’s brave shave
Local Skye resident Deagan Newman will be shaving his head on Friday 13 March to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation, the organisation that helped support his family when his Dad, Sam, was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anaemia in 2016.
“My brother, sister and I want to help raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation because they helped our Dad and our family when Dad was sick. We want them to be able to help other families too,” said eight-year-old Deagan.
Sam Newman was diagnosed in March 2016, underwent a bone marrow transplant in December 2016, and after two subsequent readmissions to hospital passed away in April 2017.
Deagan and his siblings Kaden and Kaiya are supporting the World’s Greatest Shave again this year to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation, with Deagan shaving his head at PARC on Friday 13 March.
“Dad lived around Frankston his entire life and worked at PARC for a long time,” said Deagan.
“I’m shaving my head on Friday 13 March at PARC and I’d love everyone to join me – to shave, colour or braid their hair or simply to come along and watch,” said Deagan.
PARC has hosted an event for the World’s Greatest Shave in memory of Sam each year since 2017 and has raised over $10,000 so far.
“We’re proud to offer our members, staff and the general public a chance to shave, colour or braid their hair, and it’s an honour to have Deagan leading the way this year,” said Tim Gledhill, PARC CEO.
The Leukaemia Foundation is the only national charity dedicated to helping more Australians with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related disorders survive their blood cancer and live their best life.
“It’s incredible that more than 2 million people have taken part in this event over the past two decades – and an estimated 37,500 kilograms of hair has been removed. If you aren’t up for changing your hair, simply come along for a delicious morning tea and be part of the atmosphere on the day,” said Tim.
The World’s Greatest Shave at PARC is on Friday 13 March, 10am–12pm in the PARC café. Morning tea is available for a $10 donation. Participants can have their hair shaved for $20 or coloured or braided for $5.
“Be brave and join Deagan to shave – and help raise funds for the annual World’s Greatest Shave at PARC,” said Tim.
