Congratulations to one of our members, Peter, who placed third in the International Triathlon World titles last weekend on the Gold Coast.
This championship is held every year in a different country and it comes to Australia about every nine years. This year Peter competed the 75 – 79 age group amongst other elite athletes in the sprint event: 750m swim, 20km ride and a 5km run. As this event takes even the elite athletes an hour to complete it is really an endurance event in spite of the name. Peter’s efforts had him place third in his age category (1 hour and 26) with the winner coming in about 90 seconds sooner. He says a lot of his success may be attributed to good genetics and health, however much is to be said for “use-it or lose-it”. Leading up to the triathlon Peter was highly dedicated to his training – swimming 3 times a week and attending at least one gym/treadmill session – stating that PARC played a big role in his efforts.
Peter suggests to members of any age considering taking up this sport should contact the Mornington Peninsula Triathlon Club for expert guidance and great companionship.
